Twenty-five paintings on display at the exhibition feature the precarious fate of women in today’s society and the latent beauty of their soul, which can be seen in paintings such as ‘Bud’, ‘Breeding Season’, ‘Whispering’ and ‘Whirlwind’.
Thuy, a journalist at Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, introduced her paintings to the public for the first time at her “Women” exhibition, shared with writer Vo Thi Hao, in November 2008.
Both exhibitions displayed paintings about women. “I have a similar life like other Vietnamese women, who were born when the First Indochina War finished, grew up when the second became fierce, got married after the war and then the border war broke out,” Thuy recounted.
“When their children grew up a little, they looked back themselves and started at the fact that they have never taken a rest,” Thuy pondered. “If they were not rocked by the gales of life, they were rocked by daily demands. If they were not rocked by conflicting inner feelings, they were rocked by emotional states and choices.”
“Sometimes I felt I was like a boat that floats in swells and strong winds. Water almost reaches the boat’s edge while the boat’s bottom has holes. Once the boat is rocked, writing, drawing and thinking is also rocked” Thuy explained.
Thuy has been working as a journalist for 35 years. She has published three poem collections and two short-story collections.
“Precariousness” will open until July 21.
