Parade marks Hanoi 1000th anniversary

VietNamNet Bridge - Over 30,000 people packed Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square this morning for a lavish parade to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, with millions more watching the event on television nationwide.

The square glittered with flowers, flags, balloons and the colourful costumes of the parade participants.
The celebration began in solemnity with a torchlight procession at 7:57am from the Ho Chi Minh Museum to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The torch flamed brightly on the grand staircase, seemingly kindling the strength of the Vietnamese nation.
The flag was raised, followed by the national anthem sung by 1,000 Hanoians, amidst the salvos of a 21-gun salute.
Amid the joyful atmosphere, President Nguyen Minh Triet offered his congratulations and greetings to the capital city’s citizens, to Vietnamese at home and abroad, and foreign friends, as well as sincere thanks for their fine sentiments during the grand anniversary of Thang Long – Ha Noi.
"Following the nation-building of the Hung Kings, King Ly Thai To, with a strategic vision, decided to move the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long," said Triet.
"The transfer, exactly one thousand years ago, ushered in a new era of splendid development for the Dai Viet. From that historic landmark to the era of Ho Chi Minh, Thang Long-Ha Noi, passing through 1,000 years of ups and downs, still stands firmly and uprightly and is fully worth being the nation’s heart.
"We always respect the contributions of the whole nation to Ha Noi as well as those of the capital to the whole nation, which intensifies the spirit ‘the whole nation for Ha Noi and Ha Noi for the whole nation’," Triet said to wild applause.
"We are proud that Ha Noi is the Heroic Capital – a noble title granted by the Party, State and Vietnamese people. We are here today to express our sincere, deep, and limitless gratitude to our predecessors, the late President Ho Chi Minh, and all those who were and are contributing to the capital’s construction and protection.
"The celebrations give us a chance to reaffirm the fine and noble traditional characters of Ha Noi in particular and of the Vietnamese nation as a whole: civilised, heroic, peaceful and friendly. This is the invaluable heritage passed down by our predecessors. We must take the responsibility to preserve these values and pass them down to our future generations.
"All Vietnamese people, at home and abroad, pledge to unite in a determined effort to make the capital more modern, civil and prosperous, and to build the Vietnamese nation into one of peace, independence, unity, democracy and prosperity."
Shortly after the President’s speech, a thousand voices joined in the song "Ha Noi --- Belief and Hope" and massive applause filled the square.
Ten helicopters carrying Party and national flags and banners being the slogan "Celebrate the 1,000th Anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi" signalled the beginning of the parade.
According to Sr Lt Col Nguyen Ngoc Vy, the pilots were excellent and had many years of flying experience.
"We performed on National Day in 2005, but this time we are entrusted with a more difficult assignment with many more helicopters than before," he said.
Following the performance of the helicopters came a car carrying the national coat-of-arms. Fifty-four young men and 54 young women marched alongside the car, representing the ethnic groups constituting the great solidarity of the Vietnamese community.
Then the car carried the picture of the late President Ho Chi Minh, surrounded by teenagers and children, representing his love for Vietnamese children and youth.
Cars passed carrying a Ly Dynasty dragon – the symbol of Ha Noi – and the UNESCO certificate recognising the Thang Long Citadel as a World Cultural Heritage site.
The parade then included members of the armed forces, civil servants, police, war veterans, intellectuals, officials, farmers, labourers, ethnic minority groups, and youth, demonstrating the strengths and achievements of the nation’s capital over the past 1,000 years of development, representing the national pride of the Vietnamese people, and bolstering Vietnamese faith in the Party.
Prior to today’s event, senior officials of the Party, State, National Assembly, Government and Viet Nam Fatherland Front paid floral tribute to the late President Ho at his mausoleum on Saturday morning.
Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, President Nguyen Minh Triet, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and Viet Nam Fatherland Front president Huynh Dam were joined by former Party, State and Government leaders, as well as revolutionary beterans and others.
Later on Saturday, a delegation of Party, State and Viet Nam Fatherland Front officials led by Manh laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument in commemoration of fallen combatants.

Adriana Lima was discovered while at a local mall at the age of 13. She finished in first place in a Ford Supermodel of Brazil model search. Lima later followed with a second place finish in the 1996 Ford Supermodel of the World contest. Shortly after, Lima moved to New York City, and eventually moved on from Ford, signing with Elite Model Management. Her early career consisted mostly of fashion editorial work (with early appearances in international editions of Vogue and Marie Claire in 1997/1998), as well as runway work (Christian Lacroix, Valentino, and others). Lima's first big break came when she was featured in a Vassarette billboard in Times Square. Her print career followed, and like many other famous names (Claudia Schiffer, Laetitia Casta, Eva Herzigova), Lima became a GUESS? Girl in their 2000 Costanoa and has face campaign.
Lima continued to build upon her entry, doing more print work (Maybelline, bebe, Mossimo, BCBG) and gracing the cover and editorials of more high fashion magazines (Harper's Bazaar, ELLE). Probably best known for her Victoria's Secret work and Angel status (along with Heidi Klum, Gisele Bündchen, and Alessandra Ambrosio), Lima first graced the VS runway in 2000, and was the show opener for the 2003 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
In 2001, Lima starred in BMW Films short, The Follow alongside actors Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, and Forest Whitaker. In the film, Owen's character is hired to follow Lima's, who is suspected of cheating on her famous husband, played by Rourke. The film had a runtime of 8:47 including credits, was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Lima made it clear that acting is not her priority and that she only did The Follow because it was a short film.
Lima is currently the 3rd highest paid model in the world behind Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss. She is represented by DNA NY in the United States, Lumiere Models in Brazil and VIVA Models in Europe.

Personal life
Lima, is a devout Roman Catholic and had planned to become a nun before she started modeling. Lima was born an only child. She has has been romantically linked to celebrities in this past, including a rumored engagement with rocker Lenny Kravitz and Major League Baseball player Derek Jeter. Up until recently, she was known to be dating Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein. The relationship had been a relatively hot topic for the society spy columns and celebrity watchers, specifically Page 6, New York Post and Hola! online magazine. However, she recently broke up with him for rocker Denny of Timbalada.
Lima has admitted that she was shy around boys when she was younger, and can still to this day freeze when she's around them. She got her first kiss at 17 years old, and has told reporters that she's been in 3 relationships not including her current relationship with Denny.
Lima does charitable work helping with an orphanage, "Caminhos da Luz" (Ways of Light), located in her hometown. She helps with construction to expand the orphanage, and buys clothes for poor children in Salvador, Bahia.
Adriana's best friends are Raica Oliveira, Alessandra Ambrosio and Selita Ebanks.[citation needed]
Lima's father walked out on her and her mother when Adriana was 6 months old; Lima has met him only once since. When she was about 15 years old, Lima wanted to travel to Miami for a modeling competition but she was not allowed to leave Brazil without certain legal papers that her father owned. Lima has said that she does not hate her father because "there is a reason for everything" and she believes that her life was fine growing up and that the presence of an unhappy father could have resulted in an unhappy home environment.

I wouldn't change anything about my life. I am afraid that if I did things might have turned out differently and I am currently living my dream. If that means I had to live a poor [life] and I have to deal with demons then I will do it. I got through everything and I am very proud of myself...Life without a father was confusing at times, I didn't know if I was to blame and I didn't know anything about him...I love my mother and I have a bond with her that most people don't share with their own mothers. It all worked out
